The address at which the mayor took a tumble from his step-ladder whilst in the occupation of the General Post Office. A painter by trade, Alderman, F. James fell eight-feet onto a wooden floor striking the vicinity of his right-temple. He recuperated quickly in Bartholemew’s Hospital and resumed Mayoral duties within a fortnight (much to the relief of the Council and the community).

In 1948, the Major Alderman, Frederick James had to take the council session without his mayoral chain. Unfortunately the Town Hall strong room had proved to be too strong: neither the mayor nor the town clerk and council members were able to open it. Council were forced to hold session without neither the chain nor the mace.

Israel Rosenthal the confectioner received two summons for selling chocolate and toffee beyond their maximum price. was convicted for profiteering, a case declared by the Hackney Gazette to be ‘particularly bad’. As a ‘persistent offender’ he was convicted and sentenced with the maximum penalty: £500 fine and one year’s imprisonment.

Newspaper-sellers

In Dec 1948 the Hackney Gazette reported the sad instance of the death of Mr George Bostock, aged 52. He was newspaper-seller and well-known member of the community. Mr Bostock, known to many as ‘George’ sold newspapers on the corner of Old Street and Shoreditch High-Street for 30 years.
