In 1948, the Major Alderman, Frederick James had to take the council session without his mayoral chain. Unfortunately the Town Hall strong room had proved to be too strong: neither the mayor nor the town clerk and council members were able to open it. Council were forced to hold session without neither the chain nor the mace.
